School Programs

In conjunction with Jane Jacobs and the Future of New York, the Municipal Art Society is offering a unique educational program for students in grades 6-12 that consists of a 45-minute in-class presentation, followed by a guided tour of the exhibition at the Urban Center galleries. Students will be given an interactive gallery guide with activities to supplement the tour, while teachers will receive a package of pre- and post-visit materials with ideas to extend learning across the curriculum. The in-class presentation, gallery visit and pre- and post-visit materials will support New York State learning standards.

Participants in the program will:
• Receive an introduction to Jane Jacobs, her principles and the historical context in which she worked
• Contemplate the meaning and role of cities
• Explore the various components that make up a block, a street, a neighborhood and a city
• Make observations about their own neighborhood, both its successes and failures
• Acquire tools to become an advocate for their own community

To register for this program, contact Jane Cowan at 212-935-9727 ext 284 or e-mail jcowan@mas.org. A fee of $75 per class (maximum of 30 students) will be charged and is payable upon reservation.

We look forward to welcoming you and your students to the Urban Center galleries this semester!
